Convergys Corp. will close its call center in Killeen in June, laying off about 150 employees and ending more than 15 years of business in the city's industrial park, said John Crutchfield, president of the Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce.
Crutchfield said Thursday he only recently learned of the closure. Local officials for Convergys could not be reached Thursday afternoon for comment.
"They have notified us they are closing," Crutchfield said, adding that the reason he was given was a drop in demand for the center's services.
The center receives inbound customer care calls for a credit card company.
Crutchfield said the 50,000-square-foot building located at Swanner Loop and Roy J. Smith Drive may not be empty long.
The economic development team is negotiating for a new call center that could employ more than 500, he said. The building is one of two the new company is interested in.
"It's a 'company-owned' call center, meaning it does business with its own customers, and is more stable," said Crutchfield, also president of the Killeen Economic Development Corporation. The EDC owns the building.
Convergys opened the Killeen center in 1995 and employed about 650 workers in 2005. The company owns about 80 contact centers and has 75,000 employees worldwide.
The Cincinnati-based company announced last week the closure of its Albuquerque center, which will displace nearly 700 workers, due to the loss of a large client, according to published reports.
