ELGIN, SC (WIS) - People living in one Richland County neighborhood are working together to fight a development for a nearby wireless call center.
Residents of the Woodcreek Farms subdivision met Tuesday night to voice their concerns and see if they have any options concerning where the Verizon call center is being built in Elgin.
Part of the issue is that residents don't want the center's 1,500 employees using their neighborhood as a cut-through. Another issue is the traffic jam that could happen if call center employees get off at the same time Pontiac Elementary School lets out.
Residents feel the deal for the 24-hour call center in Elgin was made behind closed doors, and they didn't find out how close the building will be to their homes until it was too late.
"It just seems as though it was just out of the clear blue," said resident Yvonne Corppetts.
"These types of developments are done in secret and all the homeowners aren't notified until all the trees are cut down," agreed Tom Dougall.
Neighbors decided on Tuesday night to form their own homeowners association, separate from a partnership with the neighborhood's developer.
Verizon says the center is in compliance with the law, and the property was posted for commercial use for years.
Verizon says this is a $40 million investment for construction of a new building and relocating from its Forest Drive location. It's expected to be complete in the fall.
