The Hartford is planning to hire 120 workers for its Southington call center in the second half of this year.

The property-casualty and life insurer currently employs 482 people in a building that the company leases at 400 Executive Blvd. Unrelated to the expansion, the company ended leases at two other buildings on the same road to save money.

The Hartford Financial Services Group Inc.'s center receives 2.7 million of the company's 9 million annual customer-service calls. The Southington center handles The Hartford's auto and property insurance offered through the AARP to its members.

The Hartford showed premium growth in its personal lines, such as those offered through AARP. That direct business requires people to answer phones. Also, people who start working at the call center tend to move to the company's other operations.

The company would not disclose how much workers will be paid.

The Hartford has had offices in Southington since 1984, when the company first partnered with AARP.

Last year, the company announced its plan to move 600 employees from an office at 200 Executive Blvd. to the insurer's Simsbury campus by this spring. And another 500 were to be moved by this spring from 100 Executive Blvd. to space in Hartford, Simsbury and Farmington.

The company ended the two leases to save on real estate expenses as the insurer planned to cut costs by $400 million, up from an initial goal of $250 million.
