Former first daughter Jenna Bush Hager spoke at today at a Texas Tech fundraiser that will raise more than $150,000 for a new nationwide call center, school officials said.
Proceeds from the inaugural Power of the Purse luncheon benefited Tech’s InfantRisk Center. The center will act as a hotline for pregnant or nursing mothers who seek information on how their medication could impact their unborn or nursing children.
Such a center doesn’t exist in the country, says Dr. Tom Hale, Tech’s assistant dean for research for the School of Medicine in Amarillo and who's heading the call center's creation. The InfantRisk Center plans to open within the next couple of months, he said.
The $75-per-plate luncheon was sold out well before Friday. Nearly 100 donated purses were on auction as well.
Hager, whom Tech paid for her appearance, spoke for nearly 15 minutes, mostly on the importance of education and her experience in South America working to help women and children lead healthy lives.
Hager, a teacher in Baltimore schools, left the room immediately after her speech to catch a flight.
Tech officials held an 11 a.m. news conference before the luncheon, but Bush did not attend.
