West Corp. will close its call center in Hampton by March 31, laying off 450.
The Omaha, Neb., company announced the closing yesterday, citing cutbacks by businesses that use the center to handle customer calls.
A spokesman said some of the workers will be invited to apply for positions at the company's 47 global call centers.
The Hampton call center opened in 1996.
In the Shenandoah Valley, Berryville Graphics has laid off 68 workers in the third round of job cuts in the past 12 months. The company in Clarke County prints books for major publishing houses.
The job cuts announced Wednesday bring the total number of layoffs since early 2009 to 138.
Mark Bone, the Berryville plant's general manager, told The Winchester Star that declining book sales were the biggest contributor to a drop in production.
Bone said he doesn't expect additional layoffs this year. He said the plant now has 520 workers.
Berryille Graphics is owned by German conglomerate Bertelsmann AG.
