MEMPHIS — A Memphis call center is laying off 426 workers, just over half its work force.
Most of Sitel’s 264 affected employees are temporary workers hired for seasonal projects, said Andrew Kokes, vice president of marketing.
“We have been an active part of the Memphis business community for a number of years, so the decision to reduce our site here does not come easy,” said Tim Wallace, site director of Sitel’s Memphis center at 1699 Sycamore View at Summer.
“This reduction is due to the changing business needs of our client and is no way reflective of the quality of customer provided by our associates.”
Sitel gave two warn notices, on Dec. 31 and again last Thursday, to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development stating that it would conduct the layoffs, Kokes said, adding the notices involved “two different customer campaigns we were managing.”
The global company, headquartered in Nashville, provides out-sourced customer contact service. It operates a customer service center in Oak Ridge that employs 500 workers.
The peak employment at the Memphis site has been 775 workers, Kokes said.
Just a year ago, Sitel’s Memphis center employed 608 workers and was adding 60 temporary employees to help with the workload.
The company employs 60,000 people in 27 countries.
